Environmental protection is the practice of protecting the natural environment by individuals, organisations and governments. Its purpose is to conserve natural resources and the existing natural environment and, where possible, to repair damage and reverse trends
Simple ways to help the environment :
1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle
Use reusable bags - avoid excessive use of plastic bags when going to the grocery store, these bags end up in landfills or in other parts of the environment. Buy reusable bags when going shopping and remember to take them whenever you pop to the shop. Alternatively you can invest in foldable canvas material bags which you can carry in your everyday bag.
Use a reusable beverage container - watch out for ways you can reduce waste by investing in reusable containers for drinks, if you or your family buys a lot of individual water bottles encourage them to buy a filter and use water from the sink, along with a reusable container. Alternatively you can buy water gallon bottle and maintain one drinking bottle for it.
Donate old clothes/toys to people or charity shops rather than throwing them away.
Recycle paper at all times. UK uses over 12.5 million tonnes of paper each year. If you have any old notebooks which are half finished tear the clean papers out and DIY yourself a new book made out of unfinished notepads. I can guarantee you will not need a new notepad for a long time. School/college/university students especially can take on this advice as families in the UK throw away 6.3 million tonnes of paper every year, and every tone recycled saves 17 trees. Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials. Think wisely before you throw a piece of paper away, reuse or recycle.
2. Volunteer
Volunteer for cleanups in your community, ask your current institution if there are any litter pick up sessions in your work/educational place. Additionally you can join various social media groups in your area which have meet ups in certain locations as a group to litter pick. You can find out more on our events section in the home bar.
3. Educate
Keep up with the news world wide, be informed on current affairs and stay political about your views. Along with that you can use your voice to spread awareness and educate others.
4. Conserve water
While nearly 70% of the world is covered by water, only 2.5% of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 1% of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in glaciers and snowfields
Simple things like not letting the tap run unnecessary when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth, or washing for elongated periods of time can make a difference in the long run.
5. Shop wisely
Avoid impulse buys. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Buy local products from local merchants when possible. Buy second hand clothing or items which can be recycled. Try and buy products with less packaging and use containers for storage, alternatively you can try and purchase recyclable packaging but ensure they are disposed of correctly.
6. Save electricity
Turn off unnecessary lights in your home, work/educational place. Try and use natural light as much as possible, get your tasks done during the day. Unplug unused electronics when you are not using them.
You can take this even further..
Extreme matters can involve reducing the amount of meat you consume weekly, and switching to plant based meals. Recently more and more people are becoming vegan and eco friendly almost as if it is a trend, however if you truly care about the environment and are able to able to access all nutrients which you need from a vegan diet rather than any other method, it would be more sustainable and eco friendly to take on a vegan diet.
